Book Review: An Appetite for Passion by Cynthia MacGregor

Blurb from Goodreads:

Kari meets Max online, and the relationship sizzles. But there is a BIG obstacle--her weight. He knows she loves to eat but doesn’t know what that’s done to her figure. Will it bother him when he finally meets her in person? Meanwhile, Jeff is funny and fun, and Kari loves being with him as a friend, but he admits he has a secret. Could it be that he is, after all, the guilty party in the political campaign sabotage? But if he’s innocent, can Kari prove it and clear Jeff’s name? And can they be more than just friends?

Review:

This short contemporary romance revolves around Kari, a plus sized publicist with bad luck in love. Her best friend is married with a baby on the way and no longer has time for her. Her friend's husband gets her involved in volunteering with a mayoral candidate where she befriends Jeff, a funny, sweet and lifelong volunteer for different causes. When Kari purchases a computer to get connected she joins a chat room and exchanges recipes with several people.

Online Kari meets Max. He seems to loves her love for food and they share many things in common. When their emails start turning towards flirtation Kari starts falling for him. They exchange pictures but she only sends him a head shot out of the insecurities she has with her body. The online relationship advances over the course of a few weeks when they start calling each other on the phone at night before going to bed.

When Max decides to make the four hour drive to consummate what he and Kari started online she worries he will not like what he sees but figures if he likes her online and over the phone that her weight will not be too much to dwell upon. She even buys a negligee that enhances her figure. Bad weather delays Max's trip and Kari is completely distraught seeking friendly comfort with Jeff, who is slowly falling in love with her, they cook and laugh together but Kari's thoughts revert back to Max.

When Max finally comes by he seems a bit cold and distant but she figures he's tired from his long drive. Unfortunately Kari's deepest fear, that Max doesn't do big woman is proven within 48 hours of the trip leaving her heartbroken.

I liked this story up until Max showed his true colors.  I agree with the character that Kari should have been truthful with him about her size, she had tried to do so many times in their daily emails but always deleted and changed the subject but from that came her feelings for Jeff who never criticized her size and never made fat jokes.  I do feel she had built up the “relationship” with Max in her head a bit more than it actually was, calling him his boyfriend before they had even met in person.

Overall, An Appetite for Passion is a well written contemporary romance with real, believable characters.

Rating: 3 ½ stars

Breaking the Rules...Smells so good

This one is for Deb...hope you enjoy an unedited excerpt from Breaking the Rules, the follow up story to Second Chances.  Feedback is welcome.

**Warning story is erotic in nature and is for adult readers only***

Taking advantage of Tony’s state of deep sleep, Rachel slowly slid under the cool bed sheets and lowered her head to the semi erect cock that tented the fabric.  With a hand on each side of his muscled thighs she nuzzled the dark hair that covered them and inhaled his crisp clean masculine musk.  The intoxicating scent made her mouth water.  Never in her twenty nine years would she have imagined being drawn to a man’s cock for the mere scent.  Biting her lower lip Rachel held back a laugh.  Tony was definitely a good change in her life.  Taking another deep breathe in she felt him shift slightly making her stop momentarily.

“Are you okay down there?” Tony asked with a chuckle in his rough morning voice.

Smiling to no one but herself Rachel sat back on her heels letting the sheet slide off.  Streaks of the morning sunlight peaked through the cracks in the blinds covering the tall windows of her room granting her a wonderful view of his muscular chest and tattooed arms.  “Good morning,” she leaned forward and dropped a kiss on his sculpted abs.  The muscles below his tanned skin bunched up then relaxed.

Sitting up Tony lifted her by the arms and pulled her to kiss her mouth. “Good morning to you,” he whispered trailing his mouth down her chin then up to her ear.  With a lick and a tug he told her, “Seemed like you were lost for a minute” he breathed against her skin and rubbed his now fully erect cock brush against her inner thighs that were now slick with her arousal.  He did this to her everytime.

With a moan Rachel kissed him back flicking her tongue against his plump lower lip then tugged it in deeper until he responded with equal hunger.  Her pussy fluttered with need but she pulled away from him, “I was just enjoying how good you smell” Rachel told him kissing and nibbling down his neck, laved at his collarbone then ventured lowered.  She covered his tattooed chest with wet kisses before she stopped to suck and pull the metal barbell pierced through his left nipple.

“Thank you?” his eyebrows rose in question as she continued rousing his senses and licked a path across his chest, tugging on his other nipple, “No one’s ever said that before.”

With an ear to ear grin Rachel continued on her way to originally destination, his delicious cock.  “Really? What do they usually say?” she asked reaching the patch of closely trimmed curls around his long hard shaft.

Tony let out a deep masculine moan, “Do you really want to hear this while you’re doing that?” he asked obviously frustrated by her teasing. His chest heaved heavily.

Wrapping a hand at the base Rachel gave him a few gentle pulls, “Yes. Tell me,” she wanted to know what his previous lovers thought of his magnificent cock.  It was a good nine inches when fully erect, perfectly formed, thick but not outrageously so.  There was such a thing as too big, at least for her.

Tony covered her hand with his own guiding it up and down in lazy slow strokes. Clearing his throat he finally answered, “They’ve said that it was hard… and long… and thick…” he told her before going silent when she lowered her head again and swiped her tongue across the slit licking up the drops of liquid that pearled there.  He tasted sweet and salty and spicy and manly.

“Yes, those are true but you also smell good and taste just as wonderful” With that she licked him from head to base then back up again.  She applied pressure to the large vein that coursed under it then repeated the same treatment to the rest of his shaft.  Finally when his hot flesh throbbed under her Rachel took him in her mouth and sucked hard bring the spongy flesh to the back of her throat then retracted causing Tony to groan...

What I am Working On...

Hi Ladies and Gents:

I know I haven't posted anything in a little while but I wanted to share a small unedited portion from my paranormal/shifter romance.

This mini scene is a flashback our heroine Nina has on the drive to her godfather's estate.  Not only was he her legal guardian after her parent's accident, Zachary Martin was the pack's Alpha and had requested her presence at the Harvest Festival.  She tried getting out of it but Zach sends his Beta to pick her up.  Knowing its best not to push his furry buttons any more Nina reluctantly packs a bag and endures the three hour drive to the Catskill Mountains.  I hope you like it.

The sounds from the ground below drifted through the open window of the air conditioned dance studio as Nina Giraldi walked to the large audio system installed in the side wall. Sliding the small mirrored door over she pushed a series of the buttons until Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2 drowned out the laughter, chatter and occasional growling from the Spring Run festivities. Just in case she turned the volume up three more notches to make sure she wouldn’t hear the sounds of the annual celebration.

This was the first year Nina decided not to attend. It was too painful and embarrassing to sit around while everyone else her age shifted into their wolf forms like they were supposed to once puberty hit, but here she was days away from her sixteenth birthday and still nothing. Most wolves started shifting between the ages of twelve to fifteen. Like it wasn’t bad enough that she was a half-breed mutt and orphan, Nina thought.

Removing the light sweater she wore over her purple leotard and tights Nina tried to convince herself that she should be happy about not having to endure the physical pain of it all. But that wasn’t enough. It was more than just going through the pain. It was a rite of passage to adulthood for the members of the pack. Sort of like when humans handed their sixteen year old son or daughter, who just got their driver’s license, the keys to a brand new car. A lot of power in inexperienced hands. Marching over to the large window she slammed it closed trying to avoid looking down at her classmates and friends. Now the dance studio was practically sound proof.

Today was the day, she decided turning around and lowering her arms to form a circle with her palms facing each other, the edge of her hands resting on her thighs. Her attention ahead. Pulling her shoulders back Nina prepared herself mentally for the dance to come. Tchaikovsky was one of her favorites. The music was strong and powerful but above all of that dancing to it was the only thing close to feeling like her parents were still alive...

Shadow Cat - Book Review

Reviewed by request of author.

Shadow Cat by Reena Jacobs is a paranormal erotic romance that takes place in the Malaysian rain forest. On a research expedition that pharmaceutical CEO Eric Randall meant to be a working vacation and an attempt to get away from a marriage obsessed girlfriend, he finds himself drawn to a beautiful native, attacked, left for dead and then rescued by our heroine. Berani is a Kemering (wehr-tiger) and healer who is trying to get the researchers off her land and protect her clan when she stumbles upon Eric. Even with language as a barrier and the constant obstacles thrown at them: his fever hallucinations of her trying to harm him, her attracting other males when she goes into heat and attacks by blood sucking creatures, Eric and Berani fight it out together and have their HEA (happily ever after).

Well written, very detailed and steamy hot where it needed to be. This is the first of Ms. Jacobs’ books that I’ve had a chance to read and hope that it won’t be the last.

Reader Request...

First and foremost I would like to wish all the mothers a happy belated Mother's day.  I hope everyone of you a wonderful, marvelous, stress free day.  If moms weren't around this world would be disastrous.  I know I would have never done my homework or chores without mom nagging me. LOL :)

I've been reading and writing a ton.  If you are following my Book Challenge from Goodreads.com you will see that I've already read 69 books since January 1, 2011 and I'm three quarters done with book # 70.  After this book I'm taking a reading break and getting some serious writing done.  Since my move into the new house two months ago there has been very little writing going on.  I've created the outline for one story and some filler for another but nothing I would call substantial writing.  I have tons of ideas jumping around and screaming in my head to get out and they will all have their chance very soon.

On that note, I have received a request to write a soap opera style story for my blog and I've decided to do this with my Fetish Birthday Party story.  Chapter 1 is available for reading in my last post and I will posting again before the end of the week.  I don't think I will be able to post daily but weekly is completely doable with my schedule.

If you would like to receive e-mail whenever I update the posts please send me a message to riacruzauthor @ gmail . com (without the spaces) I will add you to the mailing list.

Work In Progress

Hi all,

A few months ago I started posting a short story I'm working on.  Since then I've cleaned it up a bit and I'm working on the rest of it.  "Fetish Birthday Party" is now available as a pdf and has a cover.    Check it out and let me know what you think.  I'm open to feedback.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Yes I'm Still Alive

Hey there ladies and gents;

I know I promised to update with more frequency but life has been hectic.  Work has been busy as most law offices are and I'm still unpacking and getting my house presentable to humans and not just my dogs (how have decided to overrule the house)  I'm proud to announce I've been writing and have submitted a story for possible publication.  I will keep you posted on that.

Per usual my characters are have a good old time talking to me and I have taken some time to get their thoughts down in writing.  I'm also trying to plot a new story together but I'm stuck on the conflict.  I have the characters fully developed and the beginning of the story but need to throw a stick in there because there is no happily ever after without a little drama first to bring them together. Hahaha!

I'm also in the middle of planning my vacation in May, an 80's themed birthday party in mid June and a possible trip to Ohio for the Lori Foster Reader and Author Get Together.

What are you guys doing this summer?  Any great plans? Any one going to any of the book conventions this year?  Let me know.

Much Love,

Ria

I'm here....

Hi everyone.  This is the first time in almost three weeks that I've had a chance to sign in. I was in the middle of moving out of my rat, roach and termite infested house and have finally settled into a gorgeous new place.  I have plenty of room for everything including my own writing desk and two brand new bookcases, which are already packed top to bottom.  Since the move I also haven't had a chance to sit down and write anything but that is my mission this week, to actually take time to write.

On another note I found all of my lost stories...yay! I completely forgot that I had set my laptop to auto backup on a weekly basis and Norton saves the documents online so I was able to recover them.  Thankfully the only thing that is lost was my last set of edits from a month ago. That's including Second Chances who before the last edit was at a word count of 44,112.  So far the longest story I've written so far.

Oh, before I forget, I had a wild dream about a couple on a space station set in the future.  Thinking about maybe developing that into a story.  We'll see how that goes.  I'll keep you posted.

Mad, Sad and Frustrated

I just found out that my car was broken into and my backup hard drive with all of my stories was stolen along with the GPS and a few other material possessions.  To make matters worse I had already started to delete everything from my laptop because I was having it reformatted.  Thankfully I had about ten stories saved on a small USB drive but I still lost eight stories.

This is the second time something like this has happened to me.  The first time was when my Sidekick crashed.  I was using it to write things on the go, whether on my lunch break or when we went camping last summer.  The damn thing crapped out on me before I was able to send everything to my email and TMobile wasn't able to recover anything.  I lost one entire chapter of a short and two story outlines that I had written on my Sidekick's notepad program.

I'm sad and frustrated.  Everything I had ever written was there including my manuscript for Second Chances.  I want to cry...thank fully I had that file backed up both on my USB drive and my e-mail.

I know I can put them back together but I'm just thinking about all of the hours of work that were put into my stories.  My research files, my character bios, and all of my character inspiration pictures are all gone.

After I get some tequila treatment I'm going to get some sleep and when I wake up tomorrow morning (or afternoon) I'm going to sit down and write everything all over again.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Writing...

I'm back on the saddle and writing up a storm and it feels great.  I was inspired to write a short paranormal romance involving a small town of witches, wizards and warlocks a few weeks ago.  I'm not sure yet to what extent I will write the sex scenes for this story since most of my shorts have been very erotic but I have a feeling that this one might just be a straight up romance and although the basic plot is set out I'm still putting my outline together.

Witch craft and magic is not a subject that I know a lot about (only what I've seen in movies) so I've been doing a lot of research.  I want to get the basics so I could add my own creativeness to the story.  One of the books I'm reading is:

The Witch Book: The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft, Wicca and Neo-Paganism

The Witch Book: The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft, Wicca and Neo-Paganism
It's very thorough and reads like a regular encyclopedia.  Everything can be found in alphabetical order and it provides plenty of pictures and diagrams and covers everything from Abracabra to the Zodiac.

While researching for what is currently titled: Chloe & Blaez, A Witch Romance (I always separate my stories by character name and genre or story line until I give it a proper title) I'm also writing part II of my Birthday Fetish Party.

I'm really excited about this story as it will my first menage and my first girl on girl scene as well.  Part II will be from Damian's POV and will mostly take place during the limousine ride to Whet.  Part III will be split between both of them but giving each the same amount of time to voice what they are experiencing.   This part will contain the girl on girl scene and takes place in the private room reserved for Kathryn's party.

If you get a chance to read let me know what you think.

Thursday Thirteen

Here are Thirteen of best books I have read over the last year:

13.  Unmasked by Paige Tyler
I posted a review about this one a few months ago.  Loved it.  Ms. Tyler can do no wrong in my eyes.

12. The Lovely Kittengirls of Mew Orleands by G.G. Royale
Original concept for a story.  Loved the characters.  I started reading the second one but haven't had a chance to finish it but Ms. Royale doesn't disappoint, it's as hot as the first one.

11. When Angels Fall by Lena Matthews
Find out what happens when an Alpha male gets tired of his girls passive bedroom behavior and insecurities.  Great read!

10. Happily Even After by Lena Matthews
Ms. Matthews was the one to turn me on to I/R stories and I love her for that.

9. Tempted by Megan Hart
Hot, sexy and heart wrenching at the same time. I read the book in an 8 hour sitting then went back and re-read it the next day to make sure I didn't miss anything.  Too good to put down.  I laughed and cried on this book.

8. Coming Undone by Lauren Dane (Book 2 of the Brown siblings series) Great follow up to Laid Bare.

7. Inside Out by Lauren Dane (Book 3 of the Brown siblings series)

6. Truly Scrumptious by R.G. Alexander
3 hot chefs, 1 lady with a unique name, lots of sharing and the best use of icing I've read.  Will have your toes curling.

5. Wrapped Around Your Finger by Fallon Blake
Loved, loved, loved, this one.  Great combination of my favorites: erotic romance, BDSM and cooking.  Check out my review on Good Reads.

4. The Geek Next Door by Lauren Fraser (geeks and nerds need love too!)

3. Her Boyfriend's Boyfriend by Cheryl Dragon (hot M/F/M-poly erotic romance)

2. Ink Spots by Lissa Matthews
If you like your Hero's sexy, covered in ink and some piercings, this book and the rest in the series are for you!

1. Rock Me by Cherrie Lynn (see notes on # 2)
This was scorchingly hot! ps: if you are going to wiki the piercings mentioned in this book make sure you are not at work and there are no minors around...

And just for a teaser here is a Thursday Hottie:

Enjoy!
